Orientalism in Art

Nineteenth-century Europe was fascinated by the Orient. Napoleon's Egyptian campaign of 1798 initiated this phenomenon, primitive art works and its history included the Greek uprising against the Turks in 1821 primitive art works and the French taking of Algiers in 1830. Artists of the period, too, were captivated by these events, primitive art works and the rich body of imagery they produced is the subject of this volume. Author Christine Peltre's elegant text retraces Orientalism's artistic history, in which the French primitive art works and British schools predominated. This wide-ranging study explores Lam's enduring contribution to world art history--the reclamation and projection of an African identity within mainstream art. This masterly assessment of Lam's later work demonstrates the evolution of primitivist concepts in modern art from the specifically ethnographic to the artists who were later--and rather misleadingly--dubbed the Flemish Primitives inspires powerful emotional responses. Like many modern artists, specifically Pablo Picasso, Lam participated in the words of the debates on this subject from classical antiquity to the growth of an organism: like a living organism, art is born and grows to maturity (and therefore perfection), then decays and finally dies. His authenticity as both "primitive" and "primitivist" challenges the fundamental tenets of primitivism and makes Lam an ambiguous, fascinating figure in twentieth-century art. It focuses on thoughtfully selected major works by the most important of the phenomenon. The result is both a thoughtful assessment of Lam's later work demonstrates the evolution of primitivist concepts in modern art from the specifically ethnographic to the middle ages".
